Australian and New Zealand authorities are monitoring the progress of hundreds of icebergs which are spread over a large area around Macquarie Island and are drifting towards New Zealand.

The Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) said the icebergs had calved from a larger iceberg which was about 30 sq km in area originating from the Ross Ice Shelf almost a decade ago.
"On its journey to near Macquarie Island, the larger iceberg has drifted about a quarter of the way around the Antarctic coastline to the West Ice Shelf," the AAD said yesterday.
"The first sightings were made by expeditioners on Macquarie Island nearly three weeks ago.
"The icebergs vary in size from 50 metres up to 2 km in length."
The AAD is tracking their paths as they head north and east.
Maritime New Zealand has issued a coastal navigation warning for the area up to the South Island of the country.
