ll-fated ferry never had a chance

AN INQUIRY has revealed substantial safety failings related to the ferry which sank off the coast of Tonga in August, resulting in the deaths of 74 people.

The Tongan royal commission of inquiry heard last week that the 37-year-old government-owned ferry, Princess Ashika:
• had visible holes and evidence of corrosion;
• was never designed for open water;
• had been classed as suitable only for smooth...
