New Zealand's Port Otago expects further delays to container shipping from tomorrow as port workers continue their dispute over new shift arrangements.

Workers began a "go-slow" policy last week which delayed the sailing of Maersk Dunafare and also resulted in the closure of the South Island port last weekend.

Road transporters have called on the port mangement and the workers to resolve the standoff, which has caused landside congestion.

Port Otago management signalled the possible closure of the container terminal from 1500 hrs tomorrow in the expectation that workers will continue their action.

The Maritime Union of New Zealand last week denied having organised or authorised the industrial action.

Workers are disputing new flexible shift arrangements which they see as creating uncertainty about work hours and how many shifts they will be employed for each week.

Port Otago has reportedly flagged the loss of up to 35 staff in the wake of a 15% drop in container volumes.

Posted by Anonymous User at Oct 08, 2009 11:45 AM
Port of Otago sought an injunction from the Employment Court yesterday, (7 Oct 09), which was granted ordering the Matitime Union members to return to their normal working levels as they were in effect engaging in an illegal strike action. The union members must conform or be found in contempt of court.
