Australia to host 2011 global shipping meeting
Shipping Australia has been chosen to host the 42nd annual meeting of the Federation of National Associations of Ship Brokers and Agents (FONASBA) in 2011.
The announcement that Sydney would host the meeting was made at the association's 2009 gathering in South Africa this month after Shipping Australia chief executive Llew Russell pitched to host the 2011 event.
The association currently has members from 43 countries across the globe and recent additions include China and the Philippines.
The group canvassed various subjects including the Federal Government's proposals to tighten cabotage rules and the Pacific Adventurer oil spill, Shipping Australia chairman Michael Phillips said.
In addition, the presentation on economic indicators pointed to a "gloomy" outlook over the next year for the international maritime sector, with the exception of the cruising industry.
The 2010 FONASBA meeting will be held in Bulgaria.
