Piracy attacks so far this year had already exceeded the total for all of 2008, with Somalia the number one global hotspot, according to the latest quarterly report on the problem from the International Maritime Bureau.

The use of guns in attacks at sea had more than doubled, with 176 in the nine months under consideration, compared with 76 in the same period last year.
