New delay for Montara leak plugging

by Rob McKay last modified Oct 26, 2009 11:37 AM

PTTEP Australasia's next attempt to locate and plug the leaking Montara well in the Timor Sea is expected to be made tomorrow, following an equipment failure over the weekend.

The whipstock drilling assembly, which is used to aim the drill bit, failed on Saturday, causing an unscheduled delay.

"The team aboard the West Triton drilling rig is today retrieving the whipstock assembly and will then continue preparations to make a new pass to intercept the well casing," PTTEP said yesterday.

The timing of the new pass to intercept the well casing will depend on drilling progress, the company added.

The latest setback comes as political and environmental pressure has built over the time taken to plug the leak.
