Sinopec says second Timor Sea gas leak is minor

A new gas leak has come to light in the Timor Sea, with the Western Australian Greens demanding Chinese firm Sinopec release all information on an incident which has reportedly been ongoing for eight weeks.

Peter Garrett: Greens argue federal environment minister should show his hand on extent of Montara impact

The leak, at Sinopec's Puffin field, 25 nautical miles north-west of the Montara platform, was "minor", of gas only and had been reported to the Federal and Northern Territory governments, the company said.

Meanwhile, the Senate yesterday backed a Greens push for federal environment minister Peter Garrett to table a marine survey on the environmental impacts of the Montara spill by November 16.

In the face of sustained criticism in Federal Parliament, Montara operator PTTEP Australasia had been given staunch backing from both resources and energy minister Martin Ferguson and Mr Garrett in its efforts to plug the leak.
