Bulk carrier collides with adventurer's yacht
A Hong Kong-registered bulk carrier sailing north, near the port of Brisbane, had last night collided with the yacht of a 16-year-old preparing for an around-the-world solo sailing attempt.
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau is investigating the incident, believed to have occurred at about 0230 hrs today about 15 nautical miles east of Point Lookout, the northern tip of Stradbroke Island.
Limited information suggested that the unidentified bulk carrier, which had called at the port of Newcastle this week and was northbound to China, appeared to have collided with the 10-metre yacht, Ella's Pink Lady, skippered by Jessica Watson.
Some reports speculated the vessel was the 225-metre Silver Yang, though she is a bulk/container carrier.
The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) said it appeared the bulk carrier continued on her journey without stopping.
AMSA declined to name the ship until results of the investigation were known.
The collision happened less than 24 hours into Ms Watson's trial run ahead of her attempt to sail the world non-stop and without assistance.
The teenager was uninjured, however the yacht's mast and bow were substantially damaged and she was forced to return to Brisbane today.
