Yacht collision: bulker crew to be questioned
Chinese maritime authorities are waiting to interview the crew of a Hong Kong-registered bulk carrier which allegedly hit the yacht of teenage adventurer in Queensland yesterday morning.
Interviewed: Jessica Watson, seen here before her journey was cut short, assisting the inquiry.
The bulker, Silver Yang, apparently did not stop after the accident.
Mike Squires, acting director of surface safety investigations, said MARDEP, the Hong Kong equivalent of the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB), agreed to collect information from Silver Yang on its behalf when she entered Chinese shores.
The ATSB began interviewing 16-year old Jessica Watson yesterday about the reported collision between her yacht, Pink Lady, and Silver Yang 15 miles east of Point Lookout.
"There was reported radio contact between the ship and yacht after the incident but details of the communication are not known," ATSB said.
Watson was not hurt in the incident which occurred at 0230 hrs on Wednesday.
It is not known how long the investigation will take though a preliminary factual report is expected to be released in 30 days.
Silver Yang, which is carrying coal, was on her way from the port of Newcastle to China when the incident apparently occurred.
Mr Squires said an examination of Pink Lady, which was dismasted in the collision, would be carried out today.
Brisbane Water Police are also assisting.
