Bangladesh breaker protest condemned as a set up

BANGLADESH shipbreaking yards staged a protest this week against a new national import policy that requires all vessels destined for recycling in Chittagong to carry a pre-cleaning certificate.

Owners of breaking yards were reported to have hired outsiders and workers from the country’s steel-rolling mills to stage the protest in Chittagong city centre after a demonstration last month was unsuccessful, Bangladesh environmental groups told Lloyd’s List.
