Port congestion squeezes new rates rise

CONTAINER traffic out of Asia is witnessing a “super-spike” ahead of the Chinese New Year, with serious congestion in Shanghai enabling some carriers to push for impromptu rate rises, according to Hong Kong-based freight consultancy Transport Trackers.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that some forwarders cannot offer prices better than US$2,700 per feu, which is around twice the going rate only a few months ago.
One unnamed European line is said to be demanding “upgrade fees” over and above...
