Bulker towed through reef after breaking down
Bulk carrier Ocean Emperor (38,440 gt, built 1998) suffered a mechanical failure yesterday after sailing from the Hay Point Terminal to Visakhapatnam and Japan.
The vessel later had further engine problems and had to be assisted by Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) tugs in her passage through the Great Barrier Reef to a point outside the Australian Exclusive Economic Zone.
Ocean Emperor broke down about 60 nautical miles off Cairns. She was transporting coal.
Authorities were concerned the ship might drift onto the reef so placed an intervention order on her.
AMSA spokeswoman Tracy Jiggins said the ship had subsequently been repaired and escorted out of Australian waters.
"We wanted to ensure that it didn't have another break down because it had had a series of break downs," she said.
Ocean Emperor is now on its way to Singapore.
