Assessors move in on leaking ship

by David Sexton last modified Jul 27, 2010 01:56 PM

An assessment is being made of the tanks and pumping system on board a Chinese-based bulk carrier that leaked oil at the Port of Brisbane late last week.

Maritime Safety Queensland suspended shipping activity at the port for several hours last Friday after oil was found to be leaking from the Johannes Wulff which was being loaded with coal.

A spokesperson for the Australian Maritime Safety Authority said the assessors would make their own investigations before officers from Maritime Safety Queensland made their own report.

"We will continue to detain (the ship) until all actions have been taken to prevent further pollution," the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said MSQ would conduct the investigation and not AMSA as was initially reported.
