A Barcelona woman was killed instantly after falling around 10 metres and striking her head on the quay while another passenger, also from Barcelona, fell directly into the water and was taken to hospital.
The incident happened at the Ponte Doria terminal in Genoa’s Stazioni Marittime passenger port.
A statement from MSC Cruises said: “The finger bridge managed by the maritime station of Genoa has been seized by the authorities. Its sudden release seems, in fact, to be the source of the unfortunate incident. Technical assessments and the official investigation are going to clarify the dynamics that led to the tragic event."
According to Italian newspaper L’Occidentale, authorities have identified three possible causes of the collapse: a sudden gust of wind; human error in fixing the gangway; or a structural fault in the gangway itself.
Last year, sistership MSC Fantasia detached herself from her moorings in the Spanish port of Las Palmas due to high winds and a passenger fell overboard.
He was rescued by crew shortly afterwards
