Heavy equipment imports dip to four-month low
Shipments of heavy machinery to Australia fell to the lowest level in four months as a stall in infrastructure projects weighs on demand for road-making equipment.
Import volumes in June fell to 1 710 units in June from 2564 units in May, a level not seen since the 1242 units recorded in February, the Skelton Sherborne Shipping Index showed.
The category of road making and paving works equipment plunged 86% to 97 units, tracked cranes dropped 93% to five units, screeners slumped 82% 32 units and tracked loaders fell 43% to 46 units.
The total value of mining and construction equipment imported to Australia was $276m in June compared with $259m in May.
"This is in line with the increase in larger mining type trucks and excavators we are seeing move across our wharves," Skelton Sherborne managing director Brad Skelton said.
In June, Australia imported 459 excavators (<12t) and 158 excavators (>12t).
