Ron Brent named aircraft noise ombudsman

With the Federal election looming, the ban on noisy freight jets flying in and out of Australia’s major airports appears to have taken a step forward with the government this week appointing its first independent aircraft noise ombudsman.

Deputy Commonwealth Ombudsman Ron Brent will handle with complaints about aircraft noise when he begins his new role in September, Federal transport minister Anthony Albanese said in an address to the Aviation Outlook Conference yesterday.

"Aircraft noise remains a major cause for concern," Mr Albanese said.

On July 1, the Federal Government banned all new services using older and “marginally noise-complaint” jets such as Boeing 727s and Antonov AN-124 DC86s.

Existing services using these jets will cease at Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth from September 1.

The new regulations will affect more than 60 freight aircraft.
