Stevedores strike after another fatality
ABOUT 800 stevedores around Australia walked off the job last week in protest of safety conditions following the death of one of their colleagues in Melbourne.
Work at all P&O Automotive and General Stevedoring (POAGS) sites shut down for 24 hours on July 14 after a 2.5-tonne steel beam fell from a crane at Appleton Dock, killing 41-year old wharf worker Steven Piper.
