Box-leasing companies face US regulatory crack down

CONTAINER leasing companies would be subject to regulation in the US for the first time if proposals drawn up by Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) chairman Richard Lidinsky become law.

Ocean carriers may also face considerably larger fines should they be found to be in breach of the Shipping Act of 1984, with violations extended to cover unfair or deceptive practices including excessive cargo rolling, cancelled bookings or certain surcharges.
