THE TORRES Strait is arguably the most hazardous and navigationally difficult strait routinely used in international shipping.

The hazards include shallow depth in parts, unusual tidal systems with strong tidal and cross-channel flows, numerous coral reefs, very narrow channels and unstable weather patterns that include tropical storms and cyclones.
