Container freight rates slide due to low volumes

Container spot rates for the trade connecting Shanghai with northern Europe have fallen by $98 to $1612 per teu, according to the Shanghai Containerised Freight Index.

In early June, spot rates on this trade were as high as $1888 per teu. According to Alphaliner, utilisation of box ships on this trade was down to 79% in June, which was the lowest level since November 2011.
