At least seven merchant vessels are assisting in the ongoing rescue of passengers from a capsized boat believed to have been transporting asylum seekers into Australia.

The incident is unfolding around 110 nautical miles north of Christmas Island. It is in the Indonesian Search and Rescue Region.
