New terminal `vital' for economic future, says ports chief 13 December 2007 | 12:04PM

The expansion of Port Botany is an exciting infrastructure project, being delivered to cater for the increased demand for trade of imports and exports in Sydney and New South Wales.
Sydney Ports is expanding the port to provide five extra shipping berths on 60 ha of reclaimed land.
Trade through Sydney's ports has increased by double digit figures in the last year with a record 1,620,121 teu traded, an increase of 12.1% on the previous year.
Average trade growth has been around 9.9% over the last five years.
In the first four months of this financial year, trade growth has continued unabated.
October was our busiest month on record – with over 158,000 teu traded, a 10.5% increase over October last year.
November's throughput was almost as large.
With container trade increasing by double-digit figures, the new terminal area is vital to the continued economic growth of our city, and, indeed, of NSW.
