Damco/Maersk Logistics Multicultural Day
Damco/Maersk Logistics Australia recently celebrated its fourth annual Multicultural Day. The group’s national customer service manager Michael Thirgood said the day was about celebrating the cultural diversity of its staff. The SCM Electronics Team won the Best Team in 2009 prize. “Hopefully our annual celebration of diversity will inspire other companies in the transport and logistics industry to follow our lead,” Mr Thirgood said.
Young achievers surprise, delight
AFTER three days of competition, the winners of the FedEx Young Achievement award have finally been announced in Singapore. The competition for students between the ages of 16 and 19, has been won this year by a pair from New Zealand. Paul Minors and Chuck Slogrove won with their idea of a market strategy for the export of carpets to Egypt. The judges chose the winners based on the presentation and content of their idea. In second place were Talman Madsen and Aimee Gordon, also from New Zealand, and in third place was an Australian pair, Laura Flint and Jade Robertson from St Catherine’s in Melbourne. Almost 1,700 students from Australia, Hong Kong, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore and Thailand took part in the challenge and of that, just 42 were chosen to represent their countries at the finals, held in Singapore last week. FedEx Express Asia-Pacific president David Cunningham believed the challenge would benefit his company in the future. “The finalists in this year’s competition truly exhibited teamwork, leadership and innovative thinking that will help them drive success in a dynamic business world where opportunities abound,” Mr Cunningham said. Monica Macgregor is a year 10 student at Melbourne Girls Grammar School. She joined Lloyds List DCN on work experience last week.

Shipping Australia have an annual ball, again
TWO hundred shipping industry people attended the SAL annual ball at Parliament House, Sydney on September 11. The event was hosted by leader of the Nationals Andrew Stoner and sponsors were Sydney Ports, Svitzer, Patrick, Newcastle Port Corporation, Newcastle Stevedores, Port Kembla Port Corporation, ACFS and Tiger Containers. A great time was had by all according to reports, helped by the fact that each and every attendee received a gift of some sort. Entertainment included a band and an exotic Latin dance company.
Melbourne shipping ball was a generous
MORE than 700 people attended the Melbourne shipping industry’s black-tie ball at Docklands recently. Guests partied to the Royal Australian Navy band before magicians, impersonators and entertainers, including comedian Elliot Goblet and hosts Wilbur Wilde and John Blackman, did what they do best. John Wilkinson of Hamburg Sud was inducted into the Melbourne industry’s hall of fame. More than $20,000 was raised and will this year be donated to the Motor Neuron Disease Association. Motor Neuron Disease occurs when the nerve cells controlling the muscles that enable us to move, speak, breathe and swallow, degenerate and die. With no nerves to activate them, the muscles eventually weaken and waste away. Currently there are approx 1,200 cases in Australia, with 400 being diagnosed each year. With no known cause or cure, ongoing research is encouraging but requires constant funding. More information can be sought at: www.mnd.asm.au
